MEET THE BAND » PHONG

If you’ve clicked on this link then you are now in my personal territory. First of all, I want to personally welcome you and congratulate you on being brave enough to venture our new website. I hope that you will find it appealing enough to come back and visit throughout the year.

Most of you already know how the band got started and who started it and so on so I won’t bore you with the same info. If you don’t then I’ll give you the opportunity to email me and ask.

Instead of putting my bio down this time, I thought I would try to answer most of the questions that have been addressed to me lately. I figure that will give you a chance to get to know me better. If, yourself, have a question that you’re dying to ask me, just email me and I’ll answer whatever is appropriate. I promise to update this page as often as possible.

  1. The most important things in my life are God; my family, which I love dearly; my love for music; and my professional career.
  2. I don’t write all the songs on the albums. Most of them are the products of collective efforts between all the band members. I also think that is why our music is unique in its own way.
  3. I don’t like to call myself a band leader but rather a motivator. I think that the success of any groups or bands depends on their level of motivation and commitment. There are definitely ups and downs and sometimes it can be good to have someone give that extra push to make it back up the hill.
  4. I think that going mainstream is every artist’s dream. For myself, I know where I come from and who I am. I am in no rush of pushing the band towards that extremity. It’s my goal and vision for Hmong music but I’m least concern with the idea that it should be us. If it happens, then great for us; if it doesn’t, I’ll still enjoy being within my community.  What I’m more concern with is to show by example to my community the level of commitment and sacrifice the band has made to even get this far. There are definitely more roads on the map to explore.
  5. I think that we’ve been waiting long enough to bring a female “musician” onboard. Having one in the band will change the stereotypes that most people have about Hmong girls, especially from the parents’ point of view. I believe that with enough trust and encouragement, everyone can reach their dreams. I’m not concern about how it will affect the band because if it does, I’m sure it will be in a positive way. No matter what, we will always be Paradise. I hope that all of you will help us support and encourage Cina as she is one of the first, if not the only one to be playing an instrument in an all man band.
  6. I honestly think that the band has gone through many changes. One of them being the departure and arrival of new band members. In the last two years, we lost two great guys but we also were blessed with two extremely talented new members. I think that change is good. I also think that has been one of our strength. I can’t tell you how many times were left wondering what we’re going to perform at the next concert. Somehow, God has always found a way for us to get us where we wanted to go. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe we are the only band that has been around for over 10 years even with many of our band members quitting left and right. That alone should tell you how strong our determination is. I embrace change because it only makes the band better and stronger each year. So faith and hope is what you need to go by if you’re in similar situations.
  7. Age isn’t a factor for us. As you can see, we cover a wide range when it comes to that respect. That’s one of the strength in the band. We have each other to pull it all together. This way, we can adapt easier to the needs of our fans. Let me tell you this: age will get you physically at one point or the other but the determination within your heart will never grow old unless you let it do so.
  8. My goal with the band this year is to complete several projects such as releasing our remix CD by summer, completing a new album by December, and a new music video by summer of 2003. On top of that, this year, we want to take performance and showmanship to the next level… that’s all I can say at this point so stay tuned.
